Hello 👋
I’m Jason Kuan, a mortgage and finance broker in Melbourne who specialises in helping people over 50 and small business owners leverage someone else’s money for their benefit.
My mission
I want to teach you how to leverage someone else’s money so you can build your dreams – such as buying a home, building a business or intergenerational wealth.
I do this by sharing all the strategies that help people save, borrow, and pay off debts effectively.
I aim to contagiously radiate positivity and impact people far beyond my direct reach.
My thoughts about money
In the wrong hands, money can be vice.
I’ve seen it destroy lives and tear families apart. The culprit is not money. The unhealthy relationship with money can lead people to accumulate or use it unethically.
I believe having money is empowering. It is like the ink in your pen to write your story.
With money, we can buy homes for our families, provide shelter and a safe space for children to grow, a place to build fond memories and the foundation for a meaningful life, and allow children to flourish and contribute to the growth of our society and humankind.
With money, we can buy investments, build businesses, create wealth, and achieve financial freedom—the freedom to live on our terms, do whatever, whenever, wherever, however, and with whoever.
With money, we can leverage someone else’s expertise and labour. Spent wisely, it buys us time and mental clarity. It can strengthen interpersonal relationships.
Who am I?
I am a 3rd generation Malaysian-born Chinese who has lived in Melbourne for over half my life.
I am the father of two young daughters and the husband of a beautiful wife. Audrey appears tough on the outside, but she’s warm, soft, and fuzzy inside.
Professionally, I am a mortgage and finance broker. In the last 16 years, I’ve worked in real estate sales, valuations, research, and buying and selling advisory. I was also the CEO of a non-bank lender specialising in the non-resident and Sharia-compliant finance space.
My journey began when I lost motivation in my corporate real estate and residential sales career because it did not align with my values. I wanted to make an impact and improve people’s lives, not just speak corporate jargon and sell properties that I personally wouldn’t buy. My then-mortgage broker happened to be hiring, and I got the job.
Since then, I have founded and sold three successful companies, relocated from Melbourne to Malaysia (now we’re back in Melbourne), built a property and investment portfolio for ourselves, and provided my wife and children with a very comfortable life throughout our journey.
Who I am
I am a starter of new things. But hardly a finisher. I have lots of ideas. But very little comes to fruition. My excuse is ADHD. I am convinced – through free online tests – that I have ADHD. I have come to believe that ADHD is the reason my mind is always racing.
I have a busy, noisy mind. It’s constantly thinking, and the internal dialogue doesn’t stop. I’m always tired. I’m tired of thinking, listening, talking to myself and living in my head. I have a lot on my mind. I am also considered pretty reserved. I believe no one wants to listen to me and my problems.
I also find it hard to share my thoughts because they’re always jumping around, and most people cannot follow me quickly enough. The internal dialogue between the two, sometimes more, imaginary characters wouldn’t stop – even during real-life interactions with others.
I need to keep things simple in conversations so people can understand me. But before I finalise my thoughts on anything, I don’t know how to simplify them.
So why am I starting this blog?
I can keep a private journal and not publish my thoughts. But I’ll push through with this anyway. Here’s why:
- To calm my racing mind. I want to share what’s happening in my head with anyone interested.
- I’m writing to help anyone who may benefit from the contents of this blog. I’m not sure who you are, but please let me know if I’ve helped you if and when you’re ready.
- We live, work, and interact mainly behind the computer. Human relationships are the barrier to AI taking over our world. Through this blog, I hope people can get to know me better as an individual, not just the person behind the email, phone, or corporate identity.
Right now, I’m trying to
- Build a new business – AxJ Finance Brokers
- Sell an existing business
- Make time for my wife and kids
- Manage the rising costs of living
- Find an ideal workspace outside of home so we can bring the team together
- Make and save as much money as possible for our family
- Squeeze in some sleep, meditation, and exercise into my life
